It also used all kinds of crafty tricks to get what would have otherwise been massive (for the time) full color images. They did all kinds of nifty tricks with dithering and compression to make images with 8 bit color look like 24 bit color to get it to all fit on a single CD. Read the wikipedia article about the original Myst. It's pretty sweet.
