@Anonymous: I don't see what's so "wrong" or "funny" or whatever about asking people to speak English in the USA. When I visit Germany, I study up on German ... when I visit Italy, I study up on Italian ... when I visit Korea, I study up on Korean. If I were to MOVE somewhere, I'd sure as hell speak their language as well as I could.

@Anonymous: You are right. It's polite to learn the language of the country where you live. At least try. It makes your life easier.
But also, it's unpolite to ask or require something like that. I don't see it doing any good. "Speak our language or shut up!" No.2 -
@Anonymous: I lived in eastern France for a year and had to learn French - hardly anyone spoke English.

@Anonymous: You're right ... we shouldn't require someone to learn our language ... but we also shouldn't cater to them. It should not be required for a school to have bilingual teachers, or a doctors office to have nurses who speak 2+ languages. You should be free to not learn the language of a country, but people in that country should also be free to not have the ability to interact with you as a result.
That's all anyone is saying ... we don't want to cater to people who can't be assed to learn our language.21 -
