@Harbltron: You know the Olympics will bring in more revenue than spent, right? 14 billion spent, they estimate 15 billion in revenue will be made. 1 billion profit.

From what I understand, most nations lose money by sponsoring the Olympic games. There are some isolated cases of multi-million or billion dollar payoffs, but a number of nations go into debt for years or decades in order to pay the costs off.
Particularly in this economic climate with people rioting in the streets of Britain it seems callous and absurd to throw such an amount of money at such an unreliable return. -
