@Anonymous: In my country gay marriage is long time legal, we are all like why do American's just copy everything from the bible without thinking about it.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: It doesn't say anything about gay marriage in the bible. In fact in Matthew 8:5-13 Jesus affirmed a gay couple.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: lol ... Jesus healing the servant of a Centurion is considered an affirmation of a gay couple? Under that logic, Moses parting the Red Sea is an affirmation that koalas are the devil.
Further ... statements directly from the Bible against homosexuality include:
1 Corinthians 6:9
Leviticus 18:22
Leviticus 20:13
(I figure 3 is enough for now)
Look ... be for gay marriage or against it ... but don't try to pretend that being homosexual is in line with Christianity. Either be courageous about homosexuality and deny Christianity or be courageous about Christianity and deny homosexuality. Don't try to be a fence-rider.

Anyone who feels Mr Obama was not for gay marriage even in 2008 is blind. He couched his statements well, but made it pretty obvious even then to those who listen which side he stood on. He only came out today (SORT OF) and said he personally believes in homosexual marriage but the states should really decide because Biden gaffed and Carney couldn't mop it up himself.
Look ... I applaud Obama for actually saying what he believes (again, SORT OF) ... but to call this thing any sort of revelation ... well, I call bullshit.
Now, once Obama gets the cajones to say "I fully support gay marriage and will try to pass a federal law" then you know he thinks of it as a major issue rather than a political talking point.3 -

Yes, Matthew was originally written in Greek, not English. The word "pais" is used in the greek text to describe the servant. "pais" in greek is a specific term used to describe a male sex slave. Also all of the examples you're using to condemn homosexuality are from the old testament. -
Anonymous
@Anonymous: "Often, pais is used as a male slave child, sexual or non-sexual."
Additionally, you must not know your Bible ... as the first example I listed for you was from the New Testament.
Look ... I'm not condemning homosexuality ... far from it. I just get sick and tired of people trying to find validation for their thoughts/beliefs where it doesn't actually exist. -

@Anonymous: But he shouldn't pass a federal law. Marriage is a state law. A federal law regarding it would be unconstitutional, and violating states rights in that manner would be immoral.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: The federal government being unable to steal power from the states is not "broken". Our government is broken because the tenth amendment is ignored, and because the Supreme Court uses judicial review to force pseudo-amendments which they can't be called on.

@Anonymous: '"I’ve stated my opposition to this. I think it’s unnecessary," Obama told MTV. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that’s not what America’s about."'

Really "couched" terms there, huh? I'd love to know where he made it "obvious" that he was in favor of gay marriage in 2008. -

@Anonymous: Having seen this attitude all over the place, I have to ask: are you really so jaded and cynical that you think everything done by obama is manipulation? I'd go so far as to say that this statement isn't going to win him votes, rather, it may cost him votes from any devout christians who happen to vote democrat.

@Anonymous: “The pais in a homosexual relationship was often a youth who had attained full height.”
“The junior partner in homosexual eros is called pais even when he has reached adult height and hair has begun to grow on his face.” -
@Anonymous: Desperate? With Romney as an opponent? If anything, this is just a last-ditch attempt to make the presidential race slightly less one sided.

Against those who are saying it means nothing:
1) You're right, technically speaking.
2) However, to say that he is able to do so through his position as president is mislead. The president of the United States has no LEGISLATIVE power, being the head of the EXECUTIVE branch. All legislation is sourced in Congress, and it dies in committee, typically. Since the Republicans are the majority in Congress, it most certainly WOULD die.
3) Obama was in support of the gays in '08, but once getting to power, there were obviously more important issues (see: Crash of '08, Algeria, Arab Spring, Greece) to handle, being the head of state and the head of government. The President has very little role in determining domestic laws, much of that is given to the states, where the real issues lie in terms of Gay Rights. http://tinyurl.com/btwhe7o for a great breakdown state-by-state.
4) If this was strictly for votes, he would have avoided the question, but given enough of an answer to get support. He has a big hurtle to jump when Romney becomes the nominee. Romney's campaign is being funded by EXTREMELY conservative SuperPACS, 527s and 501c's as well as conservative indivuals and companies (see: opensecrets.org) All of whom are against many social reforms right now such as: abortion, gay marriage, health care, etc.
I'm gay. I didn't care that he said it. How the president feels about social issues is irrelevant because he has NO power. Stop being angry at the presidency as a whole, disregarding Obama alone. Its Congress that needs to change. -

@Anonymous: Of course! NOW it makes sense! Obama used to hate gay's but for the upcoming elections just decided to completely go against what he believes in and turns around to support gay marriage just for the votes! THERE CAN'T BE ANY DOWNSIDE!.... oh wait now he's just lost all the votes for those who are against gay marriage....hmmm well... I guess with that logic then there must be more people supporting gay marriage then there are people against it because if it was the other way around he would have to switch to an anti-gay marriage support to win the MAJORITY! NOW IT MAKES SENSE AGAIN! There are more people for gay marriage then there are against it so he switched to support gay marriage that way he could gain the majority! We'll played Obama, well played!
or you know he could have just had that opinion from the start and is simply stating what he believes in. Of course that would be the logical conclusion at least to anyone with an open mind. -

@Anonymous: So he lost the votes of some bigots, who cares? He never had their support anyways.

Obama knew exactly what he was doing when he had Joe Biden make that comment about gay marriage. There was no accident. No one asked for an apology. Since the day that Obama gave his "evolved" answer, I've heard many comments from gay people. They don't like being taken for granted, or being used as political footballs. Now black people who are conservative might also not like this move. But I guess when your campaign needs to earn a ton of money in LA at a party for George Clooney's birthday... some things are worth the risk. We shall see!
