For the post so classy it needs to be number one'd as well. "But wait," you say, "how is it double sided if it's a sticker?" Shhhhhh... it's best not to question the number oneocle.

  • New Remixer is Live!

    60 people remixing

    canvas

Hey all, the new Remixer is live. Thanks to everyone who gave their early feedback here: https://canv.as/p/r676a

    The big changes you'll notice:

    • 7 new filters for your remixes, including Noir, 8-bit, and Solarize. More to come!

    • A better experience for adding images to your remix, with the ability to search the Canvas Library and search engines all at once.

    • 11 blend modes for your layers, like Screen & Difference.

    • Now you can draw from scratch in a thread.

We're also retiring Audio Remix of GIFs for now. Let us know what you think!

  • Really not a fan of how difficult it is to fine tune opacity, font size, brush size and softness now. That's my only gripe with the update, and it's a very large one.

On a positive note, I like how you've made it easier to rotate the canvas.

    1
  • @TTHTT: Scratch that. Didn't realize holding the mouse down let you change it the old fashion way. In that case it seems like a good update to me.

  • My 3rd favorite new feature (after integer values and tools retaining unique properties) is the way the eyedropper now works. If you have the brush selected, press and hold i-key for eyedropper, click to select a color, and release the i-key to return to brush. No more manually switching back to brush. Very sweet.

  • @mikshaw: actually i guess you don't even have to hold i-key...just press it once, and then click a color...it automatically switches back to brush. Even better =o)

With the keyboard shortcuts, there is almost no need to even use the menus. It'd take anyone at most 5 minutes of drawing to learn everything that they would normally use to begin with, and all the options for editing the tools are right there with the menus closed.

The only thing you need a menu open for is the layers, but you're making global changes you don't need to see right away. Learn what all the tools do, and then you won't have to see what you're doing to see what each option does.

But can you make it to where the "knockout" tool works without having to open the bucket tool first? Seems counter-intuitive to have a shortcut for a tick-box you have to be looking at to use anyway.

@Blackout: lol'd so hard. i don't normally complain about canv.as, after all it's free, mods are cool and very active, however the old remixer is hands down better.

  • @Anonymous: I actually like most of the changes that have happened. This is actually the first time I've found more bad than good. While the original remixer did need improvement, I feel like some of the things that were actually good about the original remixer got unnecessarily removed. And maybe the reason for it was "not everyone was using it", but not everyone on here draws either, should we remove the option to draw? Not everyone does text posts, should we remove the option to reply/add comments to things?

@Jiakko: Yeah, I actually meant every change in the remixer update. I mean, I guess it's prettier, if you like the new aesthetic, but that's the only thing it has going for it. If you want to actually remix something, the old version was much better. Or at least less terrible, it still had nothing on proper image editing software.

  • @Anonymous: It's kinda like three steps forward, four steps back.

    1
  • @Anonymous: You can press P and then X to have the bucket erase available via keyboard. Maybe this is what you meant anyway, and i agree simply pressing X should be enough.

To those complaining about how every change is worse....that's just ridiculous. Yes, there are some things that are now slightly more cumbersome, but overall there have been a lot of improvements here. The remixer is much better now, in my opinion.

  • @mikshaw: I can respect that opinion. My opinion is still that it's a little worse, though.

Alright, maybe I'm retarded, but could someone help me with these questions?:
    1) How do I do only an outline of a shape? I don't want the entire shape filled with color.
    2) How do I delete text after I hit insert? Do I have to Cntrl-z it out?
    3) Why did we get rid of sound remixing?

    2
  • @zecriss: As bitchy as I've been, I can answer those questions plainly.
    1. You can't, or at least yet. Never been able to. What you could do is try is doing the shape in the certain color, then filling the inside with a different color almost all the way, like shown.
    2.Yeah, ctrl+z
    3. I don't remember the reason, but I'd have to guess (without looking) that it has to do with the coding or how laggy it could be. (the sound didn't always match up with the gif the first play through)

@zecriss: 1. I don't think you can. Building a shape from lines would work but it's effort
    2. Undo will do it
    3. ae hated them. Something to do with being more work than they were worth.

    2
  • @Anonymous: Lines are a good idea.
    Never noticed the undo feature.

  • @Anonymous: Truth. I know can click my mouse and keyboard three times for every one time I used to click with the old remixer. FUCK YEAH!

  • @Anonymous: The clone tool should be working exactly as before. If it isn't please send a bug with your OS and browser details to bugs@canv.as. Though I can probably guess your OS and browser since you're getting those text bugs, which have been around since we overhauled text, but is not unique to the new remixer.

  • @Anonymous: If your default color is black and color isn't being remembered on a tool by tool basis, you should report that bug to bugs@canvas along with your OS and browser versions.

  • @DragoniteVP: To address your first question: while the old remixer seems to have been working great for you, it didn't work so well for a lot of people. The new design was prompted by a need for a remixer that more people would be comfortable with using.

It's faster and easier to press larger buttons, a fact of interface design that is unfortunate when you're trying to pack so much into a little space. You also might be surprised that new users can also be daunted when presented with too many options when first using a new interface. Both of these considerations led us to this design. We hope that experienced users will benefit from the keyboard shortcuts which are much faster and easier than clicking. If this is your primary complaint with the new interface, I think as you begin using keyboard shortcuts more often, you'll start to like this new remixer much more.

  • @jrronimo: There isn't now, but it's something we realize people want to do and we plan on implementing it at some point.

  • @TTHTT: Again for those that missed it, you can click and drag on the properties to adjust them, and it's actually much easier than with the old remixer. Unfortunately the new design wasn't originally planned out with that in mind, so we'll probably make some changes in the future to make the dragging more apparent and have better feedback.

  • @Anonymous: Actually 'x' is the keyboard shortcut for knockout, and it appears to be broken, so I'll put that on our to-fix list. Thanks for catching that! Also, we're thinking about adding keyboard shortcuts for swap and merge layers since it sounds like that is something that some power users do very often. Let us know if you think these would improve your remixing experience.

  • @Anonymous: lol. We didn't retire the audio remixes because ae hated them. We all loved them, the problem is that there were some feature-breaking bugs in Firefox, and it was hard to maintain the code. I think I was the one that pushed the most for audio remixes and even wrote most of the code because I am really excited about the potential for combining audio with images, but I also pushed for their retirement because of the bugs and our need to focus more on image remixing until we can spend the time to really nail audio remixing. I'm still really excited about it, I just want us to do it right.

  • @Anonymous: The knockout shortcut bug will be fixed in about five minutes.

  • @dmauro: >it didn't work so well for a lot of people

Wat. How? It's was a simple as MS Paint! And this site is full of people remixing things with the old remixer.

    >The new design was prompted by a need for a remixer that more people would be comfortable with using.

Are... Are you calling people stupid?

    >It's faster and easier to press larger buttons,

No... not all the time, especially when you have to go through redundant menus. I could click on the eraser tool in maybe half of a second on the old remixer. This new one requires more clicks to be made, and maybe takes 2 seconds more to navigate.

    >You also might be surprised that new users can also be daunted when presented with too many options when first using a new interface.

I think you're underestimating your users, which is pretty insulting. Hell, I came in as a newfriend, looked at the remixer, and easily understood how to use it. I'm willing to say I'm not smarter than any other new user, so the old design is probably not as bad as you thought. If it was bad, you would have heard complaints about it, and only that. Plus, if nobody could understand how to use the old remixer, then there wouldn't be as many remixes as there were.

    > If this is your primary complaint with the new interface, I think as you begin using keyboard shortcuts more often, you'll start to like this new remixer much more.

If I, or anybody else, wanted to use keyboard shortcuts we would get PaintTool Sai or Photoshop, where the shortcuts are actually needed because of the amount of tools that are in both programs. The remixer isn't like those, and doesn't need those. I, and probably many other people on the site, work with a tablet. Why do we need to take our hands off our tablets to press some keyboard shortcuts when we could easily use our tablets to click on the tools?

    2
    2 1
  • @Anonymous: menus are needed for most of the modifications to the tools. i am finding it hard to get accurate depiction of what the tool will do. for example, the size of the brush in the image does not seem to correspond to the size of the brush when you use it. you need to make an extra click to get any of the menues to close when you are done with them.

if you want to pick a color from an area that is covered by the menu you have to just guess where it is. in the new version you can not alter stamps and change how the layers are modified at the same time. with the old remixer you could play around with the opacity of the stamp and the blending options at the same time for better results. perhaps adding layer opacity would be a good workaround.

i always found the original remixer very intuitive but some of the people i have shown it to were definitely confused or intimidated by it
