@Anonymous: I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Gen I is actually the TV series which will originally based on Generation I is actually not based solely on Generation I, but as a preview of generation II as well.

Grimer and Muk. A small purple blob of goo and a large blob of goo. Lots of creativity there!
Vanillish's line. A stylized ice cream cone, which finally evolves into a more stylized and larger ice cream cone, and probably had more thought put into its design than "hurr purple blob".
Face it, even Generation 1 had it's designs that were silly. Wow, Voltorb and Electrode! They look like Pokeballs! Wow, Magnemite and Magneton! A bunch of balls with magnets attached to them! -
