I fuckyeah'd this post, not just because dubstep sucks, but because it's destroying festivals in general, not just burning man. As dubstep has risen in popularity, the overall quality of my experiences at festivals has seriously deteriorated. I feel like my ears are being assaulted, and I sure as hell can't even dance to the cacophony. Not just that, the overall culture of dubstep is turning gems of self-expression and goodvibes into just another damn party.
Bring back the psytrance, bring back the funky tribal rhythms, bring back house, hell, play fucking smooth jazz for all I care. Just please, for the love of god, cut it out with this dubstep shit.131 2 2 1 1 1 -

There's generic dubstep and then there's good dubstep. And yes, there is dubstep with psytrance influence, definitely dubstep with funky tribal rhythms. You just have to know where to look.
And just like any genre, there's going to be people who just don't get it.
Honestly I think it's awesome that it gets a rise out of people. True art is provocative.

@Anonymous: Dubstep is not provocative in the way that profound art is provocative, but rather in the way that a fly trapped in your room is provocative.

@Anonymous: I disagree with your statement about the "overall culture of dubstep", I think it's completely untrue and it obviously comes from someone outside of the "culture" observing it through the lens of a grumpy old person. "IN MY DAY, psytrance and House were genres of dance music that really MEANT SOMETHING, not like these whippersnappers and their DUBSTEP. Ugh!"
And if I'm not mistaken, isn't every kind of dance music supposed to be a big fun party? I always thought so... -

@Anonymous: The "good" dubstep is usually only good because of the song that it's turning into dubstep, and generally everything from the drop to when the melody finally returns is shitty. Unfortunately, that's the part that makes it dubstep. Dubstep is not content to shit up original pieces, it is only happy when it turns an excellent trance song into a chopped up mess.

@Anonymous: But your opinion, like the very definition of "art" itself, is highly debatable.

@Anonymous: The culture of dubstep is quite different from what I remember festivals being about. When I go to a dubstep event, I feel like I'm about to get stabbed.

@Anonymous: Art can only be created by human creativity, rather than a dial-up modem.

@Anonymous: That's kind of an ignorant thing to say. Remixes are common among amateurs on YouTube, but some of the best dubstep I've heard was completely original with original samples. Skrillex even sings on some of his own tracks. A lot of dubstep is made up of samples that are completely unidentifiable.

@Anonymous: I think that dubstep and similar sub-genres is more about production (the complexity of the kind of sounds used) instead of actual composition. Some people just like trippy sounds I guess.

@Anonymous: Okay, so I took a crap on a canvas and somebody liked it.
Is it art? Not necessarily. Also, is it provocative? Yes, but it's not art.4 -

@Anonymous: I fail to see what's not creative about sitting down and making a piece of music, even if it's with a computer. Is a digital illustration "uncreative" because it didn't require the use of canvas, paints, and a brush?

@Anonymous: People on drugs like trippy sounds. I can attest to this, I can't stand dubstep sober, but on a hefty dose of acid and some molly I could dance to it all night.

@Anonymous: Making a piece of music is certainly a creative endeavor. However, dubstep is not music.

@Anonymous: It's extremely difficult to say what is and isn't art. But I think that's a discussion for another thread, probably #philosophy.
But, any good piece of art - despite what your personal definition of it is - is provocative. Whether it provokes a positive or negative response doesn't matter. It's whether your are provoked that matters.2 -

@Anonymous: In my opinion, black metal and death metal sound terrible - just a bunch of screaming - but I'll never say they're not music.

It's either not that difficult, or you're wrong.2 -

@Anonymous: My sister is a designer, and was actually asked on an exam "What is the definition of art?"
Her answer: "It is art if the creator says it is art."
She got full marks.53 1 -

@Anonymous: I have no idea if it's him singing on THAT song or not. If it is he's heavily distorted.
I mean tracks like "Summit" where he's actually singing. He actually sang in a band before he got into making electronic music, and he has a nice voice, too.2 -

@Anonymous: But what if the creator says it's not art and somebody likes it and claims it is?
21 -

@Anonymous: It sounds terrible because most black/death metal is already gutteral "singing" with a melodic guitar lead thats already distorted to shit so you can't actually hear the melody PLUS it's usually recorded on a shit system so it sounds even worse than it already is. DUBSTEP (or any EDM in general) is made straight from a computer and has no excuse to not to have clear production and recorded sound, and many people still dislike it.

@Anonymous: Art is intent. Are you saying you were incapable of creativity before you went to school? Sure, you may make art that is more "effective" in accordance with what you believe to be effective art, but a lack of competence does not equate with a lack of expressive capability.

Just chiming in here. I think dubstep is taken too broadly these days. I consider artists like Skream and Kromestar to produce dubstep. Skrillex's dubstep is miles away from that. Being that one calmes me down and the latter makes me cranky and uber-active.
In the end you listen to music you want to hear. Altough I do agree on the point that some "dubstep" is being used on almost every festival (especially DnB) as a 'glue' between sets. Even though it isn't a dubstep festival.2 -

My experiences with dubstep is terrible. i can handle some songs until the drop but from there on out i feel like i am being assaulted and get sick. i once went to a concert where apparently half the venues are regular playing and half are dubstep. i sadly went to one of the dubstep ones which sucks even for free tickets. the first band wasn't bad but not very active crowd. it was mostly trance with a few little dub step parts but not heavy. then people started to crowd in. i saw people lighting up joints bowls and even a glass bong which i still wonder how he got it past security. for the next hour and a half i had to listen to constant heavy drop which almost made me pass out from the migraine it gave me. the people were riled up and dancing in a manner that really showed that white people can not in fact dance. i also had to deal with some people who were just plane assholes including a guy who got pissed off because my friend took a picture of the lights on the stage and the guy was spurting off some bullshit about karma and its bad to take pictures of things, and a guy doing cocaine right behind me who kept bumping into me. after possibly the worst auditory experience of my life the main band came on. they were more of a Reggae rock with some house influences. calm at points and lots of energy at others. little drop and a nice experience. sadly the crowed had died down at that point. i am shocked and awed that the ear rape that i had to experience was considered better music that the actual band. im sure if i had smoked or taken a drug i may have liked dubstep but as far as im concerned if i cant listen to it sober then its not music.

@Anonymous: I think it's important to focus on the fact that the topic at hand here isn't whether dubstep is "art", but whether it's a legitimate musical genre deserving of respect.
And from where I stand pop-country isn't a genre deserving of respect (or most pop in general) but it's all relative. DEBATE AWAY2 -
