'Art' movies are just as shallow as Transformers. Movies like The Artisit and Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close are designed to push certain buttons that make you emotional. There is still little substance. But really there wasn't much competition, movies sucked in 2011. 2012 looks a lot better.

All silent films (aside from TGD, still has many silent scenes). I think better movies should have won, but The Artist is by NO MEANS the worst of the bunch.

which goes back to the old adage of "show don't tell"

and with that in mind, The Artist isn't award bait *cough*Hugo*cough* so much as proper homage.
