Are you serious guys ? The awards are not a competition, even if a movie, a director or an actor is nominated for the academy awards, the cesars, the goyas or even for the palme d'or it's a consecration and a recognition for their work by the whole world of cinema.

In fact, nominations for "The Artist" are telling me that there is still hope for the academy awards. Don't forget that art movies are not for slow people. You have to use your brain, when you are watching. They depend on the auteur theory.

@bloodjun: @ItchyBarracuda @alpercet I haven't watched The Artist, but I could say that it won all those awards because it's a homage to classic Hollywood (and we all know the Academy are a bunch of old conservative people), plus, it takes some balls to make a silent film in the 21st century. So, kudos to them.

'Art' movies are just as shallow as Transformers. Movies like The Artisit and Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close are designed to push certain buttons that make you emotional. There is still little substance. But really there wasn't much competition, movies sucked in 2011. 2012 looks a lot better.

@Anonymous: Oh boy I know you trollin'. Some of my favorite films of all time are "The General", "Sherlock Holmes Jr", The Great Dictator to name a few. All silent films (aside from TGD, still has many silent scenes). To imply that I am uncultured because a film decides to prey on those who want to THINK they know something about film is like, what the hell man.

I think better movies should have won, but The Artist is by NO MEANS the worst of the bunch.

as for award bait, someone tweeted this very succient observation:
the difference between Hugo and The Artist is the difference between telling you that old movies are great and showing you that old movies are great.

which goes back to the old adage of "show don't tell"

and with that in mind, The Artist isn't award bait *cough*Hugo*cough* so much as proper homage.
