As Photocopier pointed out, you can get to original image without the footer by using the shift+click menu, so you definitely don't have to use the footered images.

The footers currently update when the top sticker changes so you can hotlink the image elsewhere and it will dynamically update. In the future we hope to add more features (add the username when/if a user claims the post, maybe include the number of stickers, etc.).

Pft. The real deal here is "canv.as has a bigger user base. now make it bigger." Which is natural considering the goal is to make canv.as profitable at one point, but it also means that we're going to see more and more distractions with the intention of getting users to the site. First share buttons under every image in threads, then share buttons on every image you hover and now being (practically) forced to include the URL back to the source. The next logical step would be to 403 off-site hotlinking to any images but the ones with a footer in order to force you to use that when sharing images from here.
