The idea of American checks and balances are to help keep any one branch of "the government" from overpowering the others and creating a monarchy. So yes, the government "Should" be afraid of the people, but its not. Its afraid of the corporations. On that note the people are afraid of the Corporations also so.... = balance? -

corporations represent only those within them. That isn't bad per say as long as they keep offering good products and giving jobs to people to make them. There is nothing inherently evil about them either.
It's only bad when they DO something bad. Like bank of america. -
