It's all good and dandy, except he's a reincarnation of Gautama Buddha himself, there are thousands and thousand Buddhist temples and there is a very complicated philosophy behind that. Actually, it's so complicated, Dalai Lama himself read lectures on Buddhism all over the world just to make it somewhat clear for us, people of different culture.
tl;dr: Western Buddhists are bigots.83 1 -

@Anonymous: No Tibetan Buddhism Temples?!?!? See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Tibetan_Buddhist_temples
No complex philosophy? Why all these books then? http://www.dalailama.com/biography/books

@Paladinus: Yeah buddhists are such intolerant ignorant bigots. They should try something more intellectual and fact based like Atheism.

@Anonymous: No, Buddhism is alright. But it's not better than any other major religion when we talk about temples and such. Actually temples are alright, too.

@Paladinus: I was under the impression that the dalai lamas were meant to be the reincarnations of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara not of the Gautama Buddha, im sure though as an educated white western man you would be well informed of this and explain to me why your correct right?

@Anonymous: You've got me there, I stand corrected. That, also, proves my point to some extent. Buddhism is complicated. And temples are undeniably there.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: It doesn't. It's alright for a religious leader to be wealthy so they could concentrate on their pastoral duties. But saying that there's no need for temples, while the religion you pretty much head owns thousands of them is a bit hypocrite, I guess. Or just unthoughtful. Imagine the Pope saying something along the lines 'you don't really need Christ to be saved if you are a smart person'.

@Anonymous: This may come as a surprise to you, but the West is a cultural term, not necessarily racial.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: There are many nationalities and races that are white, and many of the ones that are called white are as like to be orange, so doesnt it equally make it a cultural term?

GG sir, well played. -

@Anonymous: Except I supose that christ is a central part of the christian dogma, im uncertain but I was unaware that the buddhists said you had to make a temple to reincarnate? I supose he still owns all the ones in china as well.
Oh also the pope was in the hitler youth and the dalai lama is kinda a refugee. -
Anonymous
@Anonymous: If Pope actually said that, I would respect it quite much. I'm just saying Dalai Lama probably wants to point out that the kindness is what matters, material stuff and everything comes after it.
Some folks like temples and religious dogmas and they've been around for a long time. So seemingly they have meaning to us and it would be quite hard to get rid of them. They have their supporters. But it's great Dalai Lama says we don't necessarily need them. I think it's quite brave. Pope would never say we don't need churches or the Christ, because his power relies on them. I don't know if Pope has some kind of life's philosophy of his own, but he hasn't told it out loud anyway. I would give much more respect to Pope if he actually tried to say something that would touch us as humans, not just as members of Christian church who are meant to obey the Bible. -
Anonymous
@Anonymous: Really? You are scraping the barrel, if Hitler youth thing is already mentioned. I have no inclination to continue this 'discussion' after that mate. Feel free to believe that Buddhism is somehow mysteriously better than any other organised religion and Dalai Lama is better than the Pope just because he happened to have his head quarters in Tibet. Both Buddhism and Christan Church are persecuted in China for the same exact reasons.
