@Anonymous: Can you name one that forbids it?
I mainly know Western Europe places like France and Germany who allow it.

@Anonymous: yes and arabia is a peninsula but not a single country in it forbids cousin marrying.
Europe has had legal cousin marrying since the Roman era, it's been illegal once or twice in protestant countries but it never lasts long. -

@Anonymous: Rick Perry is the most vile of homophobic twats and if Americans vote for him that just shows how prejudiced your country still is
-

@bee: In 2002, Perry described the Texas same-sex anti-sodomy law as "appropriate".
Perry opposes the legal recognition of same-sex marriages, and supported the 2005 ballot proposition which amended the Texas constitution by defining marriage as "only a union between a man and a woman" and prohibiting the state from creating or recognizing "any legal status identical or similar to marriage".
In his first book, On My Honor, published in 2008, Perry drew a parallel between homosexuality and alcoholism, writing that he is “no expert on the ‘nature versus nurture’ debate,” but that gays should simply choose abstinence.

@Anonymous: And? I happen to share the opinion that homosexuality is like alcoholism ... something you're born with a tendency toward, but should be avoided. And just as I'm "bigoted" for thinking people who feel gay should abstain, you are "bigoted" for thinking people who have religious beliefs against homosexuality are invalid.
Real solution? Gov't out of marriage altogether ... which is really the only solution.31 -

@Anonymous: I personally think whatever religious beliefs someone may have against it is fine, it is their personal opinion. However to support the criminalisation of homosexuals making love (i.e. the anti sodomy laws) is unjustifiable.

@Anonymous: I'll give you that -- I do think criminalizing homosexual acts is wrong. I should have included that in my initial post. Apologies.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: That's cool, and with the abstinence thing in Perry's book fair enough that is his personal opinion, the thing I most objected to is the comparison of homosexuality to alcoholism as alcoholism is effectively a mental illness that can be worked through with therapy, whereas homosexuality is genetic and natural.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: I think you mean biological not genetic. banging a bi sexual does not increase your odds of having a gay kid.

@Anonymous: alcoholism is genetic and natural as well.
you never stop being an alcoholic you just learn to abstain.

@Anonymous: alcoholism is a kind of addiction though, you can't be addicted to being gay

@Anonymous: Sure you can. Sex addicts. They have their own rehab.
You can be "addicted" to warcraft too. It may not be chemical but it's an addiction.
Of course i refer to gay sex not "being gay" which I assume you mean being attracted to men in general.

@Anonymous: mfw "you never stop being an alcoholic you just learn to abstain." I used to be an alcoholic, people who abstain and have to stay cold turkey all the time haven't beaten their addiction, those of us who used to drink the equivalent 3 70cl bottles of rum a day but can now drink socially without relapsing are those who have truly beaten addiction and have stopped being alcoholics. You clearly do not understand addiction.

@Anonymous: I just drink socially on occasion. I sometimes think about those that are struggling & try to help if I can.

@Anonymous: >truly beaten addiction
You don't understand the neurobiology of addiction. Your brain chemistry and neural pathways are altered permanently by addiction. With time and treatment, one can learn to effectively "re-route" around these pathways to allow for a healthy life; the pathways continue to exist, and relapse is always possible, and even statistically highly likely. At present, there is no method to remove the pathways, only to circumvent them.
TLDR; There is NO CURE for addiction, only treatment.
Alcoholism encompasses more than just addiction, it also means simpler forms of use and abuse that don't necessary include addictive components. The base medical definition of the alcoholic is "one who has a problem with alcohol." ie: A binge drinker may not be compelled to drink, but if, when he does, his work/ life/ relationships are effected, he would be considered an alcoholic, if in spite of this knowledge, he continues drinking behaviors that lead to unhealthy consequences.
TLDR: Addiction is a component of alcoholism, they are not medically synonymous. -

@Anonymous: and Discipline can prevent you from falling back in.
Just cause you desire something and crave it doesn't mean you gotta do it. Have self control. -

@Anonymous: >Just cause you desire something and crave it doesn't mean you gotta do it. Have self control.
Again, under addiction, your brain (and body, in the case of opiates) has PHYSICALLY changed. There is a "memory" of the neurochemical mechanisms of the drugs. It isn't that you just "stop" doing drugs or alcohol - only a very small percentage of people can "will" themselves to not relapse - after these pathways are established, it's no easier to stop the drug than it is to stop eating. Not OVEReating. EATING.
ADDICTION is a COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR that has become INGRAINED into your thought process and BIOLOGY.
For example: Alcohol abuse KILLS 2.5 MILLION people every year:
http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/global_alcohol_report/en/index.html
"Why don't they just have some self-control?"
They need help.
As you age, you WILL see people close to you DIE from addiction. You WILL watch it turn their lives to shit. Perhaps it will be YOU.
Quit pretending that addiction is just something that people just DECIDE to do because they are "weak." If you honestly believe this, and you drink or do drugs, gamble, or have any other compulsive behaviors, you should talk to a psychiatrist and get some help.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: they need discipline. millions QUIT every year. You can't just give up cause your body craves it.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: what will the psychiatrist tell you to do? He'll tell you you need to stop it. You may get encouragement but there is no magic switch or drug that will stop your desire. You need to overcome your desire.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: Millions never drink or do drugs in the first place.
Go talk to a doctor. Or read the statistics.
As you get older, people around you will die.
And you may begin to understand that you are wrong.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: I've been around addicts, I've been addicted to things to. know people who HAVE quit. How did they do it? They controlled themselves and held their desire at bay.
-
Anonymous
@Anonymous: How am I wrong? Are you saying an addict can never quit what he desires?
If he can quit how? I understand the desire never goes away but that doesn't man you can't overcome it. -
Anonymous
@Anonymous: You're wrong that it's simply a matter of willpower to "quit" and then you are cured.
It takes a LIFETIME of work to fight compulsion. As in EVERY DAY.
The vast majority of people will have more than one relapse. With opiates, fatal overdose is common during a relapse. With alcoholics, a DUI is common during relapse.
As far as "what I'm saying," it doesn't really matter, for you don't seem to be comprehending it. -
Anonymous
@Anonymous: I'm seeing a lot of excuses here. That's like saying that slam-dunking a basketball isn't just a matter of jumping high enough to place the ball in the basket without throwing it. Not everybody can jump that high, and many people can't control their own behavior. That doesn't excuse their behavior, it just makes them pathetic.
