my friends and i like to go on walks in the woods, and "in the woods" generally means "around rivers and shit" in my area. so i've always thought about what would happen if someone fell into some rapids, what i would do. and the first thing would be to take my pants off, because fuck that if i'm going to have to buy a new smartphone.

I was once walking by some small lakes in my town in the middle of the winter. The leg was frozen, but the ice was not that thick. While i walked in the dark I saw a black cat's silhouette walk on the white ice of the lake. The lake itself is artificial, so the edge was really high. It looked extremely uncomfortable and helpless, as it could feel the thin ice crumble beneath it, it's legs were shaking and it was walking really slowly. It did not dare to try and make the jump up the high edge of the lake and tried to walk slowly to a spot where it could climb up. Immediately I lay down flat on my stomach to maximize the range of my arm and tried to grab it and bring it to safety.
I succeeded. My 12-year-old self cheered in an explosion of pride over my courage and joy over the fact that the cat was saved and didn't suffer a wet, ice cold death.
But then, suddenly, after maybe 20 seconds of safety on solid ground, the cat jumped down again, just like that. It jumped down quickly and continued it's slippery, life-threateningly dangerous journey along the lake.
I didn't understand that back then, as a child. And I still don't understand it now, as a young adult.
Also, I haven't got the slightest idea why i just shared this.102 1 1 1 1 -
