It happened to me, but I just restarted Minecraft and it worked perfectly.

@Anonymous: Haha, our official Minecraft server is run by RedstoneHost. Their prices are way better than EC2, but their software stack so far has been pretty disappointing.

@levee: Yeah, chunk loading bugs are really really common. And always have been :(

The server keeps crashing due to a known bug, and I keep manually restarting it (though that means 2am -> 10am EST it'll stay down if it goes down). It's back up right now. 174.129.140.137.

If you're curious it's this traceback: http://pastebin.com/0KKQJHx0 (stack overflow), which the internet claims is related to dropping XP on death, which creates too many items to keep track of in game for the server.

is it possible to disable the XP feature if thats the only problem?
