When facebook meets 4chan on Facebook...

I have several different active usernames online. (Four of which I use daily)
None of my internet friends know my real name and none of my real friends know my usernames.
I've completely lost track of how many different e-mails I have/had.
I have a facebook account but it doesn't have a profile picture, is extremely strict on privacy and I have never even posted a "status update".
Anonymity is very important to me.1 1 -

@Anonymous: I addicted to 4chan like crack, but its always sucked...too many dicks, literally
-
-
@alphagirl: I was hoping that would open up the conversation, not shut it down.
I think a model of "fluid identity" is a much more interesting. Think of identity as a sliding scale between full real identity and anonymity. Sometimes I want a pseudonym (forum login name, game nickname, AIM screenname) which makes me more apt to talk to strangers but less likely to build longterm reputation. -

@anonymous (When facebook meets 4chan on facebook) Yikes! There's a really violent threat to Moot up there right now.
@timothy: I think that "fluid identity" is much more representative of real life anyway. Sometimes you're anonymous (casual conversation with a store clerk; anonymous nice gesture), other times you're not, which is life- not a lack of integrity.
Also, maybe I am preaching to the choir here ITT, but I will give my last dollar to anyone who can show me someone who is exactly the same person in every context of their life (family, professional, romantic relationships). Not that people are intentionally disingenuous (although some are), but there are things that I say to friends that I would never say to my parents for obvious reasons; if I talked about work (disaster research) to my friends all the time they would want to kill themselves, so I don't do that, etc. I think this naturally extends to online activities as well, because online activity is becoming more and more integrated into our day-to-day lives all the time. Eventually, we'll all be walking around with tiny internet-accessible devices in our pockets every minute of the day. Oh wait...
So Mark Zuckerberg asking us all to be the same person all the time online when we aren't even that in real life is kind of hilariously naive, IMO.
tl;dr: DON'T JUDGE ME, MARK ZUCKERBERG!21 1 -
@timothy: I'm still attracted to the same ideas that made me like text-based roleplaying on AOL when I was about eleven -
OH MY GOD I CAN SWITCH IDENTITIES ACCORDING TO MY WHIMS @#$&A NOW I'M A SPY NOW I'M A MAN NOW I'M A DAGRON. To be less hyper,
"Think of identity as a sliding scale between full real identity and anonymity." I like this. I typically don't find black and white thinking very realistic and it's the same way in terms of online identity; I think it should be about individual choice and the realistic way of looking at that is that everyone will do both at least a little, although there will be people on opposite ends of the slider- so neither is bad or better or worse since it's about preference. ...though if I had had had to pick, I'd pick anonymity- there is necessarily more freedom. I would just end up silent before I would willingly consolidate all my thoughts and tie them to myself publicly. -

@Trogdoor17: Go to Japan, where most users of 2ch are anonymous... many adults that I knew back then used to go on 2ch daily.

Personally, I prefer being given the option of posting with a real identity OR posting anonymously, just because it's nice to know that if you decide to take a risk with something you say or do, you won't be judged and nobody will know that it was you who posted that. Another reason I prefer this is because I often want to take credit for my work, as sometimes I put up to an hour of editing into my remixes and often much longer for my original content, and I like knowing that people remember my name next to that image that made them ROFL until they cried tears of laughter. But all in all, I must agree with you Timothy, you make a great point. I know this is getting long so...MAIN POINT: Both anonymity AND identity SUCK; being given an OPTION is ideal for most users, which is why I'm surprised that Mark hasn't added this option to Facebook. Personally, it makes him look narrow-minded and arrogant to new, refreshing ideas for Facebook. Sorry this was so long, but I truly believe in anonymity and/or being given the option if requested. Fuck Mark Zuckerberg.............even though I visit Facebook daily.......

What anonymity gives you is freedom to be your self without having to worry about reputation. People who basically just act like dicks when anonymous are basically just dicks, and I think anyone who acts differently anonymously is putting on a front in real life.
The Zuckerberg approach is quite good for making sure everyone behaves themselves (like santa) but you don't get this free environment we have here. Since becoming involved in anonymous communities, I've become much more open IRL, caring less about people's opinions of me and more about interacting and having fun.
The balance on canv.as (with a persistent identity you can choose to use or not) works really well if you ask me. As we seem to be getting all the benefits without the costs which are so evident on 4chan.1 1 -

@refractor: That's a cute idea until people get modded for calling someone a 'dick,' which just happened to me, or whatever other reason people feel like flagging your content for that day. Meanwhile i have seen no less than 9000 erect nipples on this site that is supposedly safe for work.

Anyone interested in the duality of Identity vs Anonymity should read Michel Foucault sometime.

@Anonymous: Yep. that is reeeeeaaaaally fucking lame. This shit keeps happening over and over. Are they trying to drive people away from this site? I have no fucking clue what part of the CoC that could have broken.
-
@Blackout: Heh ugly was the point! And that didn't violate the group rules as the group rules either don't make sense or attempt to violate the CoC
#girls: YOU WILL PUT A TOOTHBRUSH AND DO THE BRUSHIE BRUSHIE NOW
What NEEDS to happen is that moderator actions need to be made public for all users to see at the very least. Preferably it should be the users who decide via voting what is and isn't acceptable for the given area or group with only the most grievous of infractions being delt with by the mods.31 1 -

@Anonymous: I think a butt fucking ugly chick is quite decent content what with all the paint shops and gimps to be utilized.

Posting a single image of a girl in a bikini is not going to get you banned. We only ban for repeated and flagrant offenses, such as reposting content that has already been disabled.
If you don't agree with moderation policy, you're free to discuss it, and we encourage you to email feedback@canv.as, but simply reposting the disabled content is NOT okay. -

-
@dmauro: can you give us a hint as to what part of the CoC it actually violated? Most of here want to play by the rules, but we can't ever seem to figure out what the hell they are.
From our perspective, it looks like someone just got a bug up their butt. We're trying to be patient and work with this site, we know this is beta and shit is gonna be wonky, but there is a serious problem with moderation and you guys ignoring that fact is not helping the issue.1 -

@Anonymous: I hate to be the 'rules' guy, but I recall that you are allowed to swear on the site, but not to insult other users, so while it's up for debate as to whether that's a good rule, it is at least a rule.
The erect nipples could easily be dealt with by introducing a nsfw section, which can be hidden when necessary. That way people could post actual porn and you wouldn't have to see it in front of your boss, instead of everyone seeing how much they can get away with all the time. -
-
@Anonymous: it's not even trying to "get away" with something, for most of us it is pure ignorance of where the line is because it is so vague.
-
Even if someone is covered up, if it is only the bare minimum, and the image is overtly sexual, it will get disabled. From the code of conduct: "Nothing overly suggestive."
We will have a better code of conduct up soon that should give everyone a better idea of what is allowed and what is not. -
@Blackout: I have to admit, I don't know the difference between suggestive and 'overly' suggestive.
-
Anonymous
@refractor: http://canv.as/code_of_conduct
That's a real bitch-fucking-shit set of rules, and according to the CoC, I can insult the rulebook, just not the person who wrote it.
Also, the words "whore" and "fag" are banned, probably to limit the number of angry ragers from /b/ who worked their way over to canv.as.
Did the person who posted the mod in the bikini use any of said choice words?
That might be a reason. Either that, or the mod was simply offended or felt 'harassed' by someone posting a picture that they found ON THE INTERNET.2 -
-
@Anonymous: "the mod was simply offended or felt 'harassed' by someone posting a picture that they found ON THE INTERNET."
Yep. That.
There was nothing suggestive about that picture, in fact it was at least 1,000 times less suggestive than most girls posted on Canv.as....
-
In my professional experience, you can't expect community managers and employees to enforce a poorly written and executed code of conduct. In general, these are non-skilled people with low-level critical thinking skills, and any interpretation made can be highly inconsistent and just furthers resentment among the community in general. I'm not saying this is the case here for sure, cause i don't work for canv.as, but i can tell you that in my current job, and in previous jobs that i have had, this is usually the case.
The bright and creative people are usually too busy actually making something to be bothered with policing the community through moderation. -
