For the post so classy it needs to be number one'd as well. "But wait," you say, "how is it double sided if it's a sticker?" Shhhhhh... it's best not to question the number oneocle.

I am working on this, have been for a while. Will have it done and posted as a PDF for viewing and downloading by COB Tuesday.

Anyone have any suggestions, things that need explaining, terminology needing definitions, tips and tricks, anything that should definitely be included?

    Thx.

@nicanku: one tip i would add is that if you hold down the alt key with the clone tool you are able to re select a source area to clone. other than that i think this is a fantastic guide

  • Looks like I have some work to do this Monday and Tuesday. Anyone have more suggestions for guide ver0.2a? Everything helps. <3

    Revision Notes:
Corrected grammatical and consistency errors pointed out by G8D and Anonymous.
Added a small section about scripting.
    Updated some screenshots.
    Added a thank you page.

Future Plans: Expand sections on remixing. Expand group sorting explanations. Expand scripting section.

As always feel free to make suggestions. I do my best to work as much in as possible! Contributions are appreciated.

  • Very nice! The only thing I might suggest adding is a more fleshed out explanation of the community. IE, behaviour that people like. (Stickering everything, hoarding +1, memes like Nyan Cat and that stupid banna)

  • @moot:
Hey mootbro, any chance of there ever being an iPhone/mobile/touchscreen app?

  • Feedback - Take it of leave it. commend are denoted by '//'.

    What is canvas?

    // What is canv.as?

Canvas is not like other sites. Canvas is definitely not 4chan, and is even more so not /b/. Canvas is not Reddit with stickers, it is not a message board, and it is not merely an image board.

    //‘Canv.as isn’t like other websites. Canv.as isn’t 4chan. Canv.as isn’t /b/. Canv.as isn’t reddit with stickers. It is not a message board. It isn’t an image board. Canv.as is Canv.as.’

Think of Canvas as an interactive Canvas. You can post an image which others can remix, comment on, or sticker

//‘Canv.as is an interactive shared medium. Anyone can post an image which can be remixed, commented on or stickered.’

  • You can remix, comment on, or reward (or perhaps punish) an image post with a sticker

//‘It is your choice as to how you contribute to Can.vas.’

    What can I post?

    // What can I post on canv.as? (Page 1)

//feedback: I’d bullet point the first section.

    What can I post?

    // What can I post on canv.as? (Page 2)

On Canvas, just like everywhere else on the internet, you will see lots of frustration towards reposting (the act of posting an item you found elsewhere on the net).

// On canv.as, just like everywhere else on the internet, you will see lots of frustration towards reposting. (EG: The act of posting an item you found elsewhere on the net)

    REMIXING:
If you remix an image make sure to sticker the original image .
Nothing is worse than having 20 replies and not a single sticker. If the image inspired you enough to remix it, then it inspired you enough to earn a sticker. You have 8 unlimited stickers. You do not have to be stingy with them.

// Make this one paragraph or remove it. It isn’t exactly accurate. I a lot of us don’t care if OP gets stickered.

  • commend *comments, you get the idea

  • You might want to stick with either 'canv.as' or 'Canv.as'. Not Canvas.

  • Jesus Christ. I can't type worth shit.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I will think about the canvas name The website title is actually Canvas, but it can be confusing so it may need changing. Thanks!

I agree that some editing is warranted there. You should definitely look at the OP and consider whether it deserves a sticker for being inspirational, but if it's not something that is high quality enough to be elevated & surfaced to other users, the bottom line is you shouldn't give a sticker.

In my opinion, you should never give a sticker to someone because you feel like they "deserve" it. They're meant as a moderation tool and they work well if you just honestly use them on posts that you like. They don't work as well if you start stickering posts based on some kind of posting etiquette.

I disagree with the definition for cookie, I associate cleverness more with the monocle, and see the cookie more as an acknowledgment of effort, which could mean: "at least you tried", "thanks for that (but it's not worth a 1)", or "cool story bro".
I'd appreciate other people's opinions, and perhaps we could all agree on a concise, accurate (enough) definition for it.

@Anonymous: I've also used the cookie in a more positive light, where I give someone a cookie if I like what they are doing. It's like I'm giving them a cookie as a reward for good work, sort of like a #1-lite.

OP, are you still reading this thread?
I'd like to suggest you to add this to your tutorial/manual:
    ---------------------------------------------------------
There are times when you require to make "pixel perfect" remixes, but it is hard because Canv.as does not have a zoom tool; however you can use the browser's built in zoom function:

    [Ctrl]+Scroll Mouse wheel or [Ctrl]+[+] & [Ctrl]+[-]

This method is still not pixel perfect, however it is very close to it and you will make cleaner remixes.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
I'm not 100% sure if this works on IE, but I suppose it will work with the latest version.

@Anonymous: I did mention that in the example: "thanks for that (but it's not worth a 1)"

  • @Anonymous: I always read this thread. Its where I wait for information and post updates. I will get that in there about using the browsers zoom feature. I do the same, I suppose it slipped my mind.

@Everyone else about when to sticker. I have come to the conclusion that I may add a section called Canv.as etiquette. Explain that just like in real life, etiquette is optional. But it is preferred that you sticker if blah.

About the sticker definitions, I think I will add a disclaimer to the page that the stickers are self-defined but some users think the stickers should be used as: blah.

Technically there really is no true way you should or should not use the stickers. It is what the mean to us that matters, and that will be better outlined in a future revision.

Thank you for the thoughts and keep them coming.

@nicanku: If this site isnt supposed to be another 4chan then why is everyone still saying "newfriend"? You used it in the op pic even. If this is supposed to be a new site all its own then why carry over that retardedness from 4chan? Everyone is new here.

@MuttonChops: disappointing, i had a feeling that might be the case. this guide could use an update and the mods have no interest in it. the last official statement i heard about it was from ae who said,

"it's an unofficial guide made by a user (which is awesome). But it's also a sign though that some things should be made more intuitive/easier-to-use so that a new user doesn't need to read something to figure it out."

i think having a guide is a good thing for some of the less intuitive features and for explaining the appropriate etiquette of canv.as. its also a nice way to welcome new users, especially if they are struggling with something.

perhaps its time to get a group together to make an update.

@Anonymous: well a good place to start is list some things that new users would have difficulty understanding or finding out.
    1. how do you get the hipster sticker? (the answer we give obviously would have to be fake)
    2. what are the usernames of the mods? (obv. moot is moot and dmauro is dave mauro. But lollajames = Eunsan and ae = Alex Ehlke aren't as obvious. Also those others... who were they again? :P)
    3. we have a minecraft server. (this might not be obvious, and some people would care)
    4. who was nokonoko? (I see this question every now and then, but I don't know if we would need it in a guide. Your thoughts?)
    5. Something else that I can't think of right now.

@Anonymous: it seems like it would be easier to update the current one rather than get rid of the old one. the only problem it would have would be that it would be hard to keep it in the same style aesthetically and in terms of the writers voice.

additions i can think of. there is a small list above us that were added after the last version.

keyboard shortcuts are a must add
audio remixing is a must have
the new layer blending is probably a good idea to include or at least to keep an eye on since its still an experimental feature.
we now have proper sticker definitions and the staff has changed a bit, i think all the people listed in this version are still with canv.as
also the circle tool is new and the layouts for many things need to be updated
an explanation of canv.as labs as well as some of its features may be nice.

as an etiquette suggestion i think it might be nice to add something about going on to the new page and stickering unstickered content but i dont know about that. i dont think we should get too involved in telling people how they should or shouldn't use canv.as. i think its up to everyone to make canv.as the community they want it to be.

it might be nice, not to list per se but to mention that there are regularly scheduled events, holidays, drawcast, "celebrity" guest appearances to look out for.

another nice addition that may or may not be appropriate would be a tips and tricks section. most of the stuff there would maybe be obvious but to someone who is new to remixing might be handy

since canv.as has been going on for a year now and many of the early members are no longer active it may be time to document the history a little bit but i think that should be a separate project.

@Anonymous: i dont know if i trust anything about the user voice in terms of there priorities. i think it has said they are working on it for several months.

  • @Anonymous: We've been planning this for a while, and made some small steps toward it. I updated the UserVoice item to reflect its current status, sorry about that.

  • @ae: So i've found this thread and wow!
I wish someone could update the guide :D

  • @Anonymous: I have decided to post the guide for download here in editable form. Due to some financial issues, I am now working two jobs 7 days a week while going to college at night and no longer have time for my artsy internet fun. I have been intending to do this for a while, and I as I could not sleep, no better time than now.

It is a large image heavy Powerpoint 2007 file that google dislikes but you can download and edit away. Sorry I couldn't keep it up myself :/
